If you have in excess of 10 years’ personal tax, trusts or private client experience then you may be expecting promotion to personal tax partner or have recently been promoted.

Private client tax partners tend to stay with the same Firm for much longer than their counterparts in Corporate Tax or Indirect Tax. This is because of the more intimate and intense relationship that exists with the client, usually an ultra high net worth individual or wealthy family. In both cases these clients will favour long-term relationships with their advisers and the knock on effect is that private client tax partner opportunities for external hires are less common that corporate tax partner opportunities.

In terms of remuneration private client tax partners will generally earn less than corporate tax partners. There are of course exceptions to this but on average, given similar experience, sales prowess and technical ability, there could be a £100k differential in drawings for equity partners working the private client market vs corporate market.
