Alvarez & Marsal Taxand, LLC has announced that James Bartek has joined the firm as managing director in New York.

With more than 20 years of tax experience, Mr. Bartek has advised numerous companies on complex indirect tax issues across a variety of industries, including telecommunications, financial services, pharmaceuticals and technology, among others. In his new role at A&M Taxand, he will focus on building a practice dedicated to indirect tax targeting the Northeast region. Additionally, he will advise clients on issues including sales and use tax matters, such as ASC 450 (fka FAS 5), reverse sales and use tax audits, audit defense and appeal, process improvement, systems automation, nexus studies, exposure review, negotiation of voluntary compliance agreements, transaction analysis and planning, and compliance services.

“Jim’s in-depth knowledge of sales/use and other indirect tax matters, as well as his experience in a Big Four firm, make him an important addition to A&M Taxand, particularly as we continue to see increased attention being paid to states’ budgeting concerns,” said Robert N. Lowe, CEO of Alvarez & Marsal Taxand. “We welcome Jim to our growing team in the New York office.”

Added Mr. Bartek: “My role at A&M Taxand presents the opportunity to help build a practice on par with the Big Four, while working with a talented team of world-class professionals advising clients on sales and use tax matters, with no audit-based conflicts.”

Prior to joining A&M Taxand, Mr. Bartek spent 17 years with the state and local tax practice in the PricewaterhouseCoopers’ New York and Florham Park, NJ offices, where he served as a tax director. During his tenure with PwC, he was recognized nationally for his relationships with state tax officials and ability to negotiate audit and refund settlements. Previously, he spent three years with the tax department of another major corporation.

Mr. Bartek earned a bachelor of sciences degree in accounting from Montclair State University, and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the states of New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. He is also a member of the Institute of Professionals in Taxation, AICPA and New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants (NJSCPA). Additionally, he serves as chairman of the NJSCPA State Taxation Interest Group and Sales and Use Tax work group. As a member of the New Jersey Tax Director’s Advisory Council, he assists the director with developing tax policy and improvements for administration.

The (New Zealand) Financial Markets Authority has completed the recruitment of its strategic leadership team with the appointment of Adam Hunt as Head of Strategic Intelligence

Adam Hunt is currently Director of Tax Solutions and Strategy at Oracle Corporation, where he has worked since October 2010. He was previously Assurance Manager, Strategic Compliance Risk (Intelligence) at the Inland Revenue and has held positions in information services, business solutions and business systems at Turners & Growers, Gen-I Limited, and New Zealand Post.

Mr Hunt’s new role will be to build and lead FMA’s intelligence and knowledge management activities. It will involve building capability, systems and relationships to ensure FMA has accurate and up-to-the-minute knowledge of the market, both from the global/macro and micro perspectives. His start date is 16 January.

Both roles will be at FMA’s Auckland office.
