Ross Stupart RSMRSM has recruited Ross Stupart as a tax partner in the Edinburgh office. He joined in April 2017.

Mr Stupart was previously with KPMG, where he was a tax director, having initially joined the Firm in 2004. He also spent 2 years working in house with Lloyds Bank.

In his new role he works with ambitious and growing owner managed, family owned and private equity/venture capital backed businesses. He advises on a wide range of tax issues including acquisition and disposals; business succession; optimising tax relief claims; tax governance; business restructuring and re-organisations and the international tax implications of doing business overseas.

Brodies LLP has appointed a new tax partner, Heather Thompson.

Heather Thompson is a trust and tax specialist, whose experience spans a wide range of taxation matters across the corporate, private client and real estate areas. She is a member of the Law Society of Scotland’s Trust and Succession Law Reform Sub Committee and STEP, the worldwide professional association for those advising families. She joins Brodies on 3 April and will be based in the Edinburgh office, working across the firm’s top tier-ranked corporate and personal tax teams.

Johnston Carmichael has added six new partners across its Scottish practice with effect from 1st June.

David Ward R&D TaxDavid Ward is a partner in the corporate tax team and also leads the Johnston Carmichael innovation taxes team. He specialises in R&D tax reliefs. David has made successful claims for companies in food and drink, life sciences, sports science, sports apparel, IT software and hardware, healthcare, advanced engineering, engineering consultancy, agriculture and manufacturing. He has led successful negotiations with HM Revenue and Customs and has also reviewed R&D claims for prospective purchasers as part of the financial due diligence process.

David is a qualified lawyer, a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CTA) and has a first-class honours degree in molecular biology.

David is based in Johnston Carmichael’s Edinburgh office but works across the network. He joined in 2014 from Norton Rose Fulbright in London, where he had worked for 11 years, primarily specialising in corporate tax.

Richard Britten Employment TaxRichard Britten is based in the Aberdeen office with more than twenty years experience.

He specialises in providing employer tax solutions both in the UK and internationally. Advising clients on tax policy issues and implementation of expatriate tax programs. Based in Aberdeen and serving the whole of the national practice my work involves guiding companies in oil and energy and other industries including compliance, payroll support and wider employer and IHR requirements.

The promotions bring the total number of partners at Johnston Carmichael to 56.

Tax Depreciation Jobs at DeloitteMatt Smith, who currently leads Deloitte’s tax depreciation team in Scotland and the North, has been made a partner.

Mr Smith is based in the Edinburgh office and has been with Deloitte since 2009. Prior to this he worked at KPMG for 10 years, having initially trained as a Surveyor with Crosher & James.

Johnston Carmichael has announced two key tax appointments to its senior team, effective from 1 December,.

Alex Docherty from the Edinburgh office and John McAuslin from Glasgow have both been promoted to the position of tax partner.

Johnston Carmichael Tax JobsAlex joined Johnston Carmichael in 2012 from PwC. She has been involved in tax planning for owner managed businesses and high net worth individuals throughout her career to date, working for international accountancy firms.

Alex specialises in all aspects of private client tax and owner managed businesses, focusing on providing solutions for her clients through tax efficient structuring. In particular, income tax, capital gains tax, inheritance tax planning, succession strategies, partnership taxation, domicile & residence planning, and personal and trust taxation including trust accounting. Being brought up in a family business, Alex has a keen interest in family businesses and an insight into issues facing the family ‘firm’.   Alex is Treasurer of the STEP Scotland Branch and also sits on their educational committee.

Glasgow Tax JobsJohn joined Johnston Carmichael in 2013, also from PwC.  His experience focuses on corporate tax, including mergers & acquisitions, structuring and group reorganisations, corporation tax compliance and corporate tax planning.

He has provided advice to a broad spectrum of clients from individual entrepreneurs, owner managed business, partnerships, co-operatives to large listed multinational groups.

Murray Beith Murray has announced the appointment of Andrew Paterson to Partner and Sean Cockburn to Tax Director within the Edinburgh-based private client law firm. The promotions take effect on 1 November 2015.

Edinburgh Private Client Partner JobsGraham Scott has joined the private client team of Morton Fraser. He is based in the Edinburgh office.

Mr Scott has over 20 years experience in all aspects of capital tax and estate planning for individuals and their families, including Wills, Powers of Attorney and trust law.  He also advises business owners on all matters relating to business succession planning and tax efficient structures.

He joins from Aberdein Considine, where he was also a partner. Mr Scott initially trained with Dundas & Wilson, then moved to Turcan Connell. In 2006 he joined Murray Beith Murray where he was made a partner.

Graham is qualified as a solicitor in Scotland and is also a Notary Public.


Grant Thornton has promoted Vishal Chopra to tax partner.

Vishal  joined Grant Thornton in 2012 as tax director, having spent over 9 years with PwC. He advises on both corporate and personal taxes and his clients are primarily family businesses. Over the past 3 years he has worked closely with George McCracken, head of tax in Scotland, and operates from both the Edinburgh and Glasgow offices.
